Hidden Gem near Coral Lagoon
Renting a car for just one day to explore Malta? No worries, we’ve got you covered! My husband and I rented a car and explored the island in a whirlwind, checking out hidden gems, stunning cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. We started in St. Julian’s, picked up our tiny rental car, and set off on a counter-clockwise adventure around Malta. Here’s our story and the ultimate itinerary to inspire your own Maltese road trip!
Picking Up Our Tiny Rental Car: Why Small is Best!
We picked up our rental car from the Avis desk inside the Hilton Malta in St. Julian’s. It was a tiny, automatic, four-door car that comfortably fit four people, which turned out to be perfect for the island’s narrow streets. Trust me, you want a small car in Malta! The streets are tight, often barely wide enough for one vehicle, even when it’s technically a two-way road. Plus, navigating the stone walls that line many roads requires some finesse.
If you’re wondering what to pack for this kind of adventure, here’s our list:
A Few Driving Tips for Malta
Before diving into the itinerary, let’s talk about driving in Malta—it’s an adventure in itself! Here’s what we wish we knew before hitting the road:
1-Popeye Village, 2-Hidden Gem near Coral Lagoon, 3-Coral Lagoon, 4-Riviera Beach
Our One-Day Itinerary: Hidden Gems and Iconic Sights
We began our journey in St. Julian’s and made our way around the island in a counter-clockwise direction. Here’s a breakdown of our day, with a few surprises and hidden gems along the way!
Stop 1: The Red Tower (Mellieha)
Our first stop was the Red Tower in Mellieha, known for its bright color and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a quick stop but worth it for the panoramic views alone.
Stop 2: Coral Lagoon – A Sparkling Hidden Gem
Next up was the Coral Lagoon, a natural wonder we couldn’t wait to see. We parked for free on a quiet road (coordinates: 35°59'44.3"N 14°22'02.4"E) and walked about five minutes to the lagoon. If you arrive around noon in the summer, you’ll catch the sunlight illuminating the water, making it sparkle! We got there right at noon, and WOW—the water was dazzling!
On the way back to our car, we noticed a rocky swimming spot right by the parking area. With ladders to ease our way into the water, it felt like we had stumbled upon the ultimate hidden gem. The water was crystal clear and turquoise, with stunning views of the island’s cliffs and even the island of Gozo in the distance! I can honestly say this is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever swam. Pure magic!
Stop 3: Overlook of Popeye Village
The next stop was an overlook of Popeye Village (coordinates: 35°57'35.1"N 14°20'27.9"E). While Popeye Village is a tourist attraction, we didn’t actually go inside; instead, we soaked in the views of the colorful village nestled along the cliffs and the sparkling turquoise water below. This spot is great for photos!
Stop 4: Golden Bay
Next, we headed to Golden Bay, one of Malta’s most famous beaches. There are multiple free parking lots, and we stopped for a snack break. If you want to swim, the beach is lovely, with soft sand and calm waters. You’ll also find food trucks, a snack bar, and a restaurant nearby.
Cliff Views at Stop #6
Stop 5: Riviera Beach
We stopped for lunch at Riviera Beach, where we grabbed a bite from a food truck parked near the beach. The hike down to the beach involves quite a few stairs, but the views from the top are breathtaking. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are several hiking trails, including a popular one that leads to Qarraba Bay, which is only accessible by foot.
Stop 6: Cliff Views
Our next hidden gem was a viewpoint with stunning cliff views (coordinates: 35°54'12.0"N 14°20'03.6"E). After a short 5-minute hike, we reached a spot with jaw-dropping views of the cliffs and ocean. If we had more time, we could have hiked a bit further to Blata tal-Melh, which we’ve heard is equally spectacular.
Stop 7: Dingli Cliffs Viewpoint
We then made our way to the more touristy Dingli Cliffs viewpoint. While the views were gorgeous, we preferred the earlier cliff stop, which was less crowded and gave us a closer look at the scenery.
Stop 8: Hidden Gem – Ghar Lapsi
One of our favorite stops of the day was Ghar Lapsi. This spot felt like a hidden paradise, with few tourists and mostly locals enjoying the clear waters. The swimming cove here was magical, and it rivaled the beauty of Coral Lagoon. Don’t miss this if you’re in Malta!
Entrance to Mdina
Stop 9: Mdina – The Silent City
Our final stop was the historic city of Mdina. We arrived just before sunset, and the golden hour light bathed the old stone walls in a beautiful glow. Exploring the narrow alleyways felt like stepping back in time, and as a Game of Thrones fan, it was fascinating to see where some scenes were filmed. After wandering through the streets, we enjoyed dinner on a terrace with stunning views of the countryside. We capped off the night with gelato and took in the changing atmosphere as night fell over the city.
Driving Back to St. Julian’s and Returning the Rental Car
After a day packed with adventure, we headed back to St. Julian’s to return our rental car. Before doing so, we had to stop for gas, and this was a bit of a learning curve. Most gas stations in Malta require you to pre-pay for gas at a single pay station. We typed in the pump number, selected how many liters we wanted, and then finally started pumping. If you’re driving in Malta, be prepared for a similar process!
Final Thoughts
Our day in Malta was nothing short of amazing! Renting a car gave us the flexibility to explore the island at our own pace, and we discovered some incredible hidden gems that we’ll never forget. If you’re short on time but still want to experience the beauty of Malta, this one-day itinerary offers the perfect mix of adventure, stunning scenery, and local culture. Happy travels!
