7-Day Southern Maine Adventure: Hidden Gems and Local Secrets
Southern Maine is one of my absolute favorite getaway spots, and as a native of Upstate NY, I’ve made this trip countless times. From stunning beaches to charming coastal towns, here’s how I would spend a week in Southern Maine—packed with personal tips and insider secrets to make your trip unforgettable.

Saturday: Arrival in Ogunquit
Afternoon: Arrive in Ogunquit and settle into your accommodations. Here are a few of my personal recommendations:
VRBO: Perfect for families or groups—just book early, as these go quickly. Book here.
The Beaches Guest Rooms & Cottages: Budget-friendly, pet-friendly, and just a short drive from Ogunquit. Bonus: there’s a pool! Book here.
Anchorage By The Sea: Right in the heart of Ogunquit. The sprawling lawn with Adirondack chairs overlooking the beach and access to the Marginal Way make this the ultimate spot. Book here.
Cliff House Maine: A short drive away but worth it for the dramatic cliffside views, infinity pools, and indulgent lobster tater tots at their lobster shack. Book here.
Evening: Take a stroll downtown. Browse the shops and grab dinner at Ogunquit Beach Lobster House (sit on the rooftop for amazing river views). End the night with ice cream at Big Daddy’s.
Sunday: Ogunquit & Perkin’s Cove
Morning: Start your day with coffee at Mornings in Paris (get there early to beat the crowds!). Then, take a walk along Ogunquit Beach. Stroll all the way up to Moody Beach and enjoy the soft sand and stunning views.
Afternoon: Walk the Marginal Way to Perkin’s Cove. Once there, explore the shops, cross the iconic footbridge, and grab lunch at Footbridge Lobster (their lobster rolls are legendary).
Evening: Enjoy dinner at Oarweed Restaurant in Perkin’s Cove. Ask for an outdoor table to soak in the views. Catch sunset on your walk back to Ogunquit. The views are outstanding from the Marginal Way!

Afternoon: Take a scenic drive to Nubble Lighthouse in York. Snap some photos and indulge in a lobster roll at Fox’s Lobster House or Cape Neddick Lobster Pound.
Evening: End your day with drinks and dinner at BeachFire Bar & Grille. The cozy outdoor ambiance around the fire is unmatched.
Tuesday: Kennebunkport Day Trip

Afternoon: Visit the Bush family compound’s viewpoint and enjoy lunch at The Clam Shack (it’s a must!).
Evening: Wrap up your day with dinner at The Boathouse Restaurant. The waterfront setting is magical.
Wednesday: Lazy River Adventure & Wildlife Refuge
Morning: Plan ahead for a lazy river ride from Ogunquit to Moody Beach. Bring your floaties, know the tide schedule, and park a car at the end point. It’s a unique and fun experience!
Afternoon: Explore the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. The easy trails and estuary views are peaceful and free to visit.
Evening: Enjoy dinner at Baskin River Fish Camp in Wells. The Instagram-worthy decor and diverse menu make it a hit with locals.
Thursday: Portland Excursion
Morning: Drive up to Portland, a foodie’s paradise! Start with brunch at Eventide Oyster Co. (try the brown butter lobster roll).
Afternoon: Explore the Old Port district, with its cobblestone streets and local boutiques. Check out a scenic lighthouse cruise, or if you’re in the mood for a margarita, head to Terlingua and check out their hidden back patio.
Evening: Return to Ogunquit and relax at your accommodations or grab wood-fired pizza at Cornerstone Artisanal Pizza.
Friday: Mini Golf & Ogunquit Nightlife
Morning: Play a round of mini golf at one of Ogunquit’s charming courses.
Afternoon: Spend your last afternoon at the beach or strolling through downtown Ogunquit.
Evening: Cap off your trip with dinner at Rose Cove Ogunquit, followed by a night at The Front Porch Piano Bar. Upstairs, you’ll find lively piano sing-alongs that keep the fun going late.
Saturday: Departure
Morning: Before heading home, grab one last coffee and pastry from Mornings in Paris. Take a final walk on the beach or along the Marginal Way to soak in the coastal beauty one last time.
Final Tips for Visiting Southern Maine:
Parking: Paid parking is everywhere. Use Ontio Way in Ogunquit for free parking and a manageable one-mile walk into town.
Reservations: Summer is busy—book your accommodations, tables, and activities early.
Transportation: A car is essential; Ubers are sparse.
This week-long itinerary is packed with personal tips and hidden gems to make your Southern Maine adventure unforgettable. Whether you’re exploring Ogunquit’s charm, indulging in lobster rolls, or soaking up the coastal beauty, you’re sure to fall in love with this slice of New England paradise.
