Building in the French Quarter
New Orleans is a city like no other, bursting with culture, history, and endless opportunities for adventure. From its vibrant music scene to its incredible cuisine, the Crescent City is a must-visit destination for travelers from all walks of life. While Mardi Gras is one of New Orleans' biggest draws, the best time to visit is actually right before the official celebration begins. Why? You still get to experience the incredible parades, but with far fewer crowds. Keep reading for my top recommendations on where to stay, what to do, and how to make the most of your trip to New Orleans!

Getting to New Orleans
New Orleans is accessible by air via Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), located just 15 miles from downtown. Most major airlines offer direct flights to MSY, making it easy to plan your trip. Once you arrive, you can take a taxi, rideshare, or airport shuttle to your accommodations. If you prefer to drive, parking in the city is available but can be limited in certain areas, especially during parade season.
Where to Stay in New Orleans
Choosing the right accommodation is key to making the most of your trip. Here are my top picks for every budget:
Budget Option:Hotel St. Pierre – Located in the French Quarter, this charming and affordable hotel features Creole cottages and a pool, all while keeping you close to the action.
Mid-Level Option:Embassy Suites by Hilton – I’ve stayed here, and it’s fantastic! The location is convenient, and the free happy hour is a great perk after a day of exploring.
Luxury Option:Ritz Carlton – I've also stayed here, and if you’re looking for ultimate New Orleans-style luxury, this is the place to be! The location is perfect, and the hotel offers impeccable service and charm.
For Groups or Longer Stays:Book a Vrbo in the Garden District. This area offers beautiful historic homes, quiet streets, and easy access to downtown via the streetcar.

Things to Do in New Orleans
No matter when you visit, New Orleans has plenty to offer. Here are my must-do activities:
Explore the Outdoors
Visit Audubon Zoo – A family-friendly spot featuring exotic animals and beautiful grounds. We spent half a day at the zoo meandering around!
Stroll the French Quarter – Admire the stunning architecture, snap photos of the colorful balconies, and browse unique boutique shops.
Music and Nightlife
Frenchmen Street – A fantastic alternative to Bourbon Street with live music, great food, and a more laid-back vibe.
Bourbon Street – It’s an iconic experience, and you have to see it at least once. Grab a hand grenade cocktail at Tropical Isle for the full experience.
Historical and Haunted Attractions
Admire Jackson Square – This historic park is the heart of the French Quarter and offers stunning views of St. Louis Cathedral.
Visit a Cemetery – The "Cities of the Dead" are famous for their above-ground tombs. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is one of the most well-known.
Ghost Tour in the French Quarter – Whether or not you believe in ghosts, the stories are fascinating and worth the experience. We did this tour, and our whole group found it fun!
Shopping
Shops of the Colonnade – This open-air market offers unique gifts, souvenirs, and local products.
Where to Eat and Drink in New Orleans
The food in New Orleans is second to none. Here are some of my favorite spots:
Breakfast: Cafe Du Monde – The beignets and chicory coffee here are legendary. Pro tip: The line moves fast, so don’t be discouraged if you see a crowd.
Lunch in the Garden District: Try Commander’s Palace for an upscale Creole dining experience or District Donuts for a more casual vibe with incredible food.
Dinner in the French Quarter: Visit GW Fins for fresh seafood or Antoine’s for classic Creole cuisine with a history dating back to 1840.
Drinks: Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar – One of the oldest bars in the U.S., this spot has a historic and slightly eerie vibe that’s perfect for a late-night drink.

The Best Time to Visit New Orleans: Before Mardi Gras
While Mardi Gras officially begins on Epiphany (January 6th) and culminates on Fat Tuesday (March 4th), the weeks leading up to the main event are packed with parades, and the city is far less crowded. This is the sweet spot for enjoying all the festivities without the stress of massive crowds.
Key Parades to Watch
Krewe of Chewbacchus – A quirky and fun sci-fi-themed parade in the Marigny neighborhood.
Krewe of Barkus – A parade for dogs and their owners, this one is a must-see for animal lovers.
Krewe of Muses – Known for their beautiful floats and coveted shoe throws.
Tips for Attending Parades
Arrive early to get a front-row spot. Bring snacks and a drink, and grab a folding chair (if you have one) to make the wait more comfortable.
Keep an eye out for “throws,” or freebies tossed from the floats. Popular items include beads, cups, doubloons, and even decorated shoes or coconuts, depending on the krewe. My group got SO MUCH stuff when we went to the parades - we had a blast!
Pack a bag to carry all your treasures home!
Final Thoughts
New Orleans is a city that should be on everyone’s travel list, and visiting right before Mardi Gras is truly the best way to experience the magic of the city.
